On September 22nd, 2018, the Pierre Berton Heritage Centre in Kleinburg, Ontario celebrated its grand opening. This new cultural institution offers visitors an engaging, interactive experience exploring Canada’s national story, inspired by the work of renowned author and media pioneer Pierre Berton. A longtime Kleinburg resident, Berton was a prolific writer, broadcaster, columnist, and editor who was deeply involved in his local community, supporting events, championing the environment, and promoting Canadian identity.
Established by the City of Vaughan to honor his legacy and community connections, the project transformed the historic Kleinburg United Church, a 1926 Gothic Revival-style building in the Kleinburg Heritage Conservation District. Meticulously restored and preserved by Lynch + Comisso, the building’s original character was maintained while incorporating modern features and amenities. Exterior masonry, stained glass, wood ceilings, flooring, and other architectural elements were carefully restored, while a new ramp, elevator, and universal washroom were subtly integrated.
The result is an engaging environment that celebrates the past while meeting present and future community needs. Through their innovative and creative approach, the project team successfully transformed the former church into a vibrant heritage center, serving as a cultural and educational landmark. It now offers a venue for artistic, cultural, and educational programs.
