The project is located on the shores of Lake Simcoe and forms part of a suite of three buildings: a gatehouse, a cottage, and a boathouse. The cottage, an existing masonry structure, was in need of a major renovation. The Octagon Room – the hub of family gathering – is a space large enough to accommodate multiple functions however was ill suited to a Kitchen. The renovation increased the connection to the outdoors and transformed one of the spokes of the Octagon into a dedicated kitchen space. Integrated and effective lighting was an important goal for the Owner so it features prominently and subtly, all operated with a home automation system. Natural and indigenous materials and art bring warmth and beauty to this peaceful retreat.
