Sitting across from a shady pedestrian entry to High Park, the owners of this understated bungalow were looking to create more usable outdoor space for relaxing and entertaining. Their landscape designer, Jennifer Hayman, introduced us to integrate her planting ideas with the architecture.
The simple gable roof is extruded over the carport to create a seamless screened porch, complete with skylights, heater and engineered fan plus a new sliding glass door to the living room extending the livable space to the exterior. This porch has a more public sun-drenched balcony for their herb and tomato garden, while stepping down to the more private built-in corten steel-clad cooking and entertaining bar at the rear. The dark bronze/grey finishes and perforated privacy screens contrast beautifully with the light stone patio and pale pink hydrangeas framing the garden.
