Dorset Cottage

First, we worked with this client on their city home renovation.  They hired us again to assess their old family cottage.  We determined the existing cottage could no longer meet the family’s needs. Structurally, it required extensive work, and the building was encroaching on the neighbor’s property.

The site is steeply sloped toward the lake.  The new design solution cascades down the slope, providing gentle changes in elevation between bedrooms and living areas, and an organic shape to the roof structure, accommodating a natural flow for water and snow.  The new cottage sleeps up to 8 people.

The exterior material palette is designed to blend into the natural landscape.  Inside, the home has a Nordic aesthetic, featuring a wood ceiling, wood floors, and a free-standing wood-burning stove.

Client quote

Hi Steve, we wanted to let you know that we’re just saying yesterday how happy and thankful we are that we got you in to design our house.  As you know, we’d already paid for a layout from someone else, and you came in and totally changed the design – showing us how we could get what we needed in a smaller footprint.  We had a big party on the weekend and everyone comments on how innovative the space is designed.
