The clients have a large extended family and believe the heart of the home is in the kitchen. Their main goal was to create a welcoming and inviting space where family and friends could gather comfortably, with room for at least 12 around the kitchen table. To achieve this, we designed a new one-story rear addition facing the pool, dedicated to the kitchen and dining area.
The kitchen now opens directly to the backyard, with floor-to-ceiling windows providing a strong visual connection to the outdoors. We maintained the connection to the formal dining room and stair hall, but reduced their size to prioritize a more spacious cooking zone. The increased glazing across the rear required careful consideration of sunlight control, so we incorporated automated blinds discreetly hidden in a small ceiling valence.
Additionally, we repurposed an underutilized den space at the front of the house as a dedicated “Tasting Room.” This serves as an entertaining area showcasing the clients’ love of wine and spirits. Custom cabinetry, shelving, and a central tasting table were incorporated. A custom window light box with shelving was created to display bottles and increase ambient light from the foyer.
