As Kleinburg continues to evolve, many homeowners are reimagining their 1980s builder homes — replacing dated layouts with light-filled, functional designs that better suit modern lifestyles. This project is a prime example. The clients, now empty nesters, envisioned a contemporary residence that harmonized with the neighborhood while making better use of their beautiful rear yard — a cherished space they’ve enjoyed for years. The design was shaped by two key constraints: an existing pool and a mature pine tree, both of which were preserved to maintain the character of the site.
One of the primary goals was to create a bold and welcoming front entrance, a stark contrast to the original home where the front door was tucked away behind three garage doors. The new design features a striking two-storey central block flanked by single-storey wings at the rear, forming a serene courtyard. In the evening, the rear elevation glows like a lantern, casting light across the backyard through vertical precast fins that accentuate the façade’s height and elegance.
Inside, the ground floor functions as a bungalow — designed to support aging in place — while the second floor offers guest accommodations and a gym for visiting family. The basement includes two unique spaces that reflect the owners’ passions: a personal driving range and a dedicated baking kitchen. Detailed millwork, including the custom-designed kitchen table and built-in beds, adds warmth and character to the home’s contemporary design and natural finishes.
